Australian Teenager Max Scutchings Crowned Junior World Gliding Champion

18-year-old Australian pilot Max Scutchings has been crowned Junior World Gliding Champion after an extraordinary performance at the 14th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships in Aalen-Elchingen, Germany.

Representing Australia on the world stage, Max competed against some of the best junior glider pilots from around the world, with 47 pilots taking part in the Club Class competition.

The championships were held from 1 to 14 August 2026. Pilots competed in Club and Standard classes, flying daily cross-country racing tasks designed around the weather and soaring conditions of the day.

Unlike powered aircraft racing, gliding competitions are flown without engines. Pilots launch by aerotow before setting off on a task that can cover hundreds of kilometres. They use rising air, or thermals, to gain height and then race between designated turning points. Success depends constantly reading the weather, choosing the best route, manage their altitude and make split-second tactical decisions while flying safely.

That combination of flying skill, weather knowledge, strategy and decision-making makes competitive soaring one of the most demanding forms of aviation.

Max, a member of the Adelaide Soaring Club at Gawler, South Australia, celebrated his 18th birthday during the championships before going on to secure the world title.

Just 21 months ago, Max completed his first solo cross-country flight, and he entered his first gliding competition only nine months ago. In less than two years, he has progressed from making his first independent cross-country flights to becoming a Junior World Champion.

His result came against an experienced international field, including pilots with considerably more competition experience and the current European Junior Champion.

Australia was also represented by Amber Davidson of the Gliding Club of Victoria, who produced an impressive performance to finish 13th overall from the 47-pilot field.

Amber is also relatively new to the sport, having completed her first solo flight only two years ago. Her performance, alongside Max’s world championship victory, highlights the strength of the emerging generation of Australian young pilots.

Together, Max and Amber have delivered an outstanding result for Australian gliding on the international stage.

For Max, the journey from his first cross-country flight less than two years ago to standing on the top step of a world championship podium is a remarkable achievement.
