Flying Training and Coaching

Gliding is a dynamic sport enjoyed by participants all over the world. There are many facets, meaning that there are opportunities for you to focus on the parts of the sport you enjoy the most. These might include learning to fly a glider, Cross Country Soaring, Aerobatics, Instructing, Coaching, and Competition Flying.

There are many progression pathways are designed to help you reach those goals, and assist you in staying engaged with the sport, on whatever level or area of interest appeals to you.

Whether you’ve never flown before, or have some other aviation background, or you want to improve your gliding skills there is training available.  In addition to flying training, clubs and regions offer other courses relating to the enjoyment of the sport.  There is a pathway for all.

Flying Start

Your journey begins here as you learn the fundamental skills of gliding and are introduced to the fun of soaring in a safe and supportive environment.  Initial training of the Glider Pilot Certificate syllabus to solo standard. Available at most clubs or you can do a course. 

Flying Further

Once you are able to fly solo the next stage of the pathway will guide you through post solo training to a Glider Pilot Certificate Qualification.

Flying Faster

With a Glider Pilot’s Certificate in your possession,  you are now ready to improve your flying speed and maximize performance – Improved understanding of thermal structure and triggers, advanced understanding of weather conditions and forecasts and techniques for successful task planning.  Pilots should be able to complete a 500km flight  by the end of this course

Gliding Courses

A number of clubs and organisations provide full-time courses.  Some offer courses all year-round; others offer courses periodically during the year. Courses usually run over over a week (5-7 days).  Ab Initio courses typically made up of 25-30 flights.
