The Sky’s The Limit: The Australian Gliding Team Gears Up for 2023 World Championships
Australia’s proud sporting tradition takes to the skies this December, as our national gliding team prepares to compete in the much-anticipated World Gliding Championships. The excitement doubles as the competition is set to take place right here in the heartland of Australian gliding, Narromine.
This prestigious event, scheduled from December 2nd to 16th, 2023, draws in the best gliding talent from all corners of the globe. It’s a contest of skill, precision, and tactics mastering sky. This year, our own Australian gliding team, comprising a mix of veterans and rising stars, is all set to benefit from familiar conditions and the hearty cheers of the home crowd.
Miles Gore-Brown, Captain of the Australian Gliding Team, captured the sentiment perfectly:
“Competing at the World Gliding Championships is always a thrilling experience. However, this year’s event is incredibly special with Narromine, the cradle of Australian gliding, as its backdrop. We can’t wait to display to the world the prowess of Australian glider pilots on our home turf.”
The team representing Australia at the Championships are Tobias Geiger (15m class), Adam Woolley (15m class), Bruce Taylor (Standard class), Greg Beecroft (Standard class), Daniel Summers (Club class), and James Nugent (Club class). Each brings unique skills and experience.
Adam Woolley, one of the selected pilots, expressed his excitement,
“It’s a huge privilege to represent your country on home soil, and it’s a cherry on top that it’s at one of my favourite sites in Australia. I’ve achieved most of my long distance and record flying from Narromine. The weather and location are perfect for such a championship, the area energises me, and it suits my strengths as a pilot. It feels great!”
As the World Gliding Championships descend on Narromine, we can’t wait to welcome supporters, and glider pilots from across the country, and indeed the world, to join us in supporting our home team.
