Looping to New Heights: Father-Son Duo Sets Gliding World Record
On Australia Day, 26 January 2025, the skies above South Australia were the stage for a record-breaking flight that was not only about setting new benchmarks but also about inspiring the next generation of aviators. Superintendent David Scutchings APM, alongside his son Max, set a new Guinness World Record for the most consecutive loops in a glider. The previous record stood at 24, but together, they achieved an impressive 45 loops!
The Record-Breaking Flight
The flight took place at the Adelaide Soaring Club at Gawler, where Dave is not only a member but also a mentor. Under perfect flying conditions, Dave and Max demonstrated exceptional skill and coordination, surpassing the previous world record with determination and grace.
The Pilots Behind the Controls
Superintendent David Scutchings, or Dave as he is known, has a rich history with aviation. His extensive experience includes flying gliders, aeroplanes, and over a decade in the police helicopter. Recently, he has focused on gliding, particularly enjoying the quiet thrill it offers. Sharing this passion with his son Max has been a source of joy and pride, as Max has quickly become proficient in the sport.
A Strategy for the Future
Dave has initiated a “Young Guns” strategy at the Adelaide Soaring Club, aiming to attract and inspire young people to take up flying. This initiative is about more than just teaching them to pilot gliders; it’s about instilling a love for aviation and the discipline and dedication it requires. Breaking the record with his son was a live demonstration of this commitment, showing young members what they can achieve with the right guidance and perseverance.
Supporting a Noble Cause
In conjunction with this achievement, Dave has been actively working towards a fundraising target of $20,000 for SA Police Legacy, supporting families within the police community during times of need. He chose this record attempt as a high-profile way to raise awareness and funds for this cause.
Why This Challenge?
This world record attempt is part of Dave’s broader ’50 weeks of 50′ challenge, marking the year leading up to his 50th birthday with memorable and impactful activities. His love for aviation and his career in law enforcement have converged in this endeavor, reflecting his dual passions for flying and community service.

Reflections on the Achievement
This world record is more than an aviation milestone; it’s a message to the youth that the sky is not the limit but the beginning. It’s about passing on a legacy of passion, precision, and perseverance to future generations. “Achieving a Guinness World Record was an epic way to celebrate Australia Day, doing exactly what I love the most – flying. I hope this inspires others to achieve their dreams,” David says. For more insights into his aviation adventures and community initiatives, connect with David on LinkedIn here.
