Honourable Company of Air Pilots Australia
2024-5 Gliding Scholarship

The Honourable Company of Air Pilots Australia (HCAPA) is pleased to offer two (2) gliding scholarships for 2024-5. The scholarships will be co-hosted by Gliding Australia (GA) and delivered through an affiliated gliding club within Australia.

Anyone is welcome to apply for the scholarship, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria and terms and conditions as set out below.

Applicant eligibility criteria:

  1. Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident, and under 30 years of age (as at 1 January 2024). Applicants under the age of 18 must have the written consent of their parent/s or guardian/s to apply.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate a keen interest in aviation, and a strong desire to pursue an aviation career, either as a professional, private or recreational pilot. No previous flying experience is required.
  3. If not already a member, become a member of GA, and meet GA’s financial obligations for the period of the scholarship.

Terms and conditions:

  1. The scholarship period is from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025.
  2. The value of the scholarship from HCAPA is $1500. The scholarship funds can only be expended against flying costs and cannot be used for any other purpose.
  3. For an ab initio pilot, the scholarship will be sufficient for approximately half the training required to achieve “first solo” standard. For those already in training, it can be used to progress towards attaining their GPC.
  4. On receipt of the scholarship, the recipient, if not already a member, will be required to become a member of GA and an affiliated gliding club of their choice, at their own expense. The scholarship cannot be used for GA/Club membership fees.
  5. Scholarship funds may only be applied to the use of club owned sailplanes and tugs and where their operation is directly managed by the recipient’s nominated club. Tugs and gliders from other club sites under the control of another club are not covered by scholarship funds.
  6. No further correspondence will be entered into after the scholarship has been awarded. Applicants will be formally advised of the outcome of their application once the selections are completed. Unsuccessful applicants may seek feedback from HCAPA.
  7. HCAPA will maintain regular liaison with, and monitoring of, the recipient.
  8. Funds not expended prior to the allocated time period may be forfeited, unless extenuating circumstances can be demonstrated.
  9. HCAPA reserves the right to remove funding from the recipient if the terms or spirit of the scholarship programme are not being met. This would not be done without appropriate consultation with the recipient, GA, and club officials.
