Motor Glider Incident – 27 Apr 2024

Gliding Australia regrets to advise that at approximately 13:45 on 27 April 2024, an accident occurred at Mount Beauty Airport involving a member of the Melbourne Gliding Club. The incident involved a Grob G109B Motor-Glider, registered VH-GUM.

We regret to inform members that Greig Wanless of the Melbourne Gliding Club and his passenger, Ms. Kate Callingham, have tragically passed away. The flight was intended to scatter the ashes of Kate’s father, Max Callingham.

The tragedy was witnessed by family and friends, and members of the Mount Beauty gliding community.  First responders attended the scene until emergency services arrived, however the crash was fatal to both occupants.

First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and friends of Grieg Wanless and Kate Callingham.  We also are concerned with the wellbeing of their Melbourne Gliding Club, Alpine Soaring Mount Beauty, and Mount Beauty Gliding Club colleagues and friends, first responders and supporters.

Gliding Australia is cooperating with the authorities and investigators to understand the circumstances surrounding this accident. We will provide all necessary support to the Police, coronial authorities, and club members during the investigative process.

We are aware of the impact this event has on our community and are dedicated to supporting the well-being of all involved.

Gliding Australia regrets to advise that at approximately 13:45 on 27 April 2024, an accident occurred at Mount Beauty Airport involving a member of the Melbourne Gliding Club. The incident involved a Grob G109B Motor-Glider, registered VH-GUM. Unfortunately, both the pilot and a passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene by attending emergency personnel, including the Victorian Police and Ambulance Services.

The pilot was experienced and known for his love of soaring and the camaraderie within the club. The passenger accompanying him was a female. The aircraft, constructed in 1983, has been maintained and certified in Australia since 1991.

At this time, our thoughts are primarily with the families and friends of those lost, as well as with the entire soaring community in Mount Beauty and Victoria. Gliding Australia is cooperating with the authorities and investigators to understand the circumstances surrounding this accident. We will provide all necessary support to the Police, coronial authorities, and club members during the investigative process.
