How did you get started in gliding?     I started Hang Gliding in 1984 and moved to the UK to further my skills. After 20 years of competitive flying, I transitioned to gliding in the UK, bought my own glider, then moved back to Australia.

Who have been your most significant mentors or influences in gliding?    I think my biggest influence in gliding has been Bruce Taylor, who just performs magnificently year after year. He just does less stupid stuff than everyone else most of the time. Matthew Scutter is awesome too, not only in his flying ability but his sheer audacity in developing Skysight and using it not only to win a JWGC but also to produce some stunning unsupported safari adventures. Then there’s my partner at this coming Worlds, Adam Woolley, who more than anyone else I know has planned their entire life around gliding to make sure they are where they are today. Adam, you’re awesome.

Back in the Hang Gliding days, my great mentor was multiple British champion Bob Calvert, who instilled in me the desire to win, over many evenings in the pub.

What are some of the major competitions you’ve participated in, and how did you perform?  I’ve been to 9 WGC events in 4 classes; my best solo result was 6th in 2012 and 4th with Matthew in 20m class in 2018.

What’s your training routine like? How will you prepare for the upcoming competition? Unfortunately I won’t get much airtime between now and the competition, so I’m focusing on mental preparation and studying the competition area through analyzing past competition flights. The previous flying I’ve had in Czech Republic has a big overlap with the area we will be flying, so that is a great advantage.

What are your goals / aims for the upcoming competition? To support Adam, my team partner, in getting a podium result. If I can be up there with him then so much the better! I truly believe he’s got the chance to make it and I want to be a part of that.

What’s something interesting most people don’t know about you? Most of the interesting stuff people already know, unfortunately for me.

What advice would they give to someone interested in getting involved in gliding? Don’t stop at solo. The real fun begins with cross country.
