“Yes Girls Glide” — Team Germany Takes Flight at GCV

The Gliding Club of Victoria is proud to announce the launch of our midweek volunteer crew for the upcoming soaring season, an inspiring team made up almost entirely of female glider pilots and tug pilots. This initiative—affectionately known as “Team Germany”—aims to showcase what’s possible when women take the lead in aviation, embodying the spirit of Yes Girls Glide!

Why “Team Germany”? Nearly all members of this remarkable group hail from Germany, bringing with them a wealth of skill, energy, and passion for the sport. Together, they’re here to demonstrate that women not only belong in the cockpit—they thrive there.

An International Effort

This initiative was born from a cross-continental collaboration between Dr Sybille Krummacher, Chairperson of the Federal Sub-Committee for Women and Families of the German Aeroclub (DAeC), and GCV’s own Tom Spiesser. The idea: to assemble a female-led operations team to run midweek flying at GCV. The DAeC has embraced and supported the project at a senior level, helping promote it to Germany’s 2,000 female glider pilots—part of a 22,000-strong community.

The result? An impressive roster combining experienced flight instructors, emerging talents, and aspiring instructors, all coming together at GCV this summer. The team’s activities will be supported locally by George Ross (Midweek Operations Manager) and Alison Swart (tug pilot), alongside Werner and Jutta Scholz, who bring a wealth of technical and instructional expertise.

More Than Just a Crew

Team Germany isn’t just about running the flight line—it’s about building connections and inspiring future generations of glider pilots. The younger members have already launched a blog, aircrew.rocks/@gcvmidweekcrew, where they’ll share their experiences, reflections, and adventures throughout the season.

With GCV also hosting JoeyGlide in January, this initiative offers a unique opportunity for international exchange and mentorship among young pilots.

Stay tuned for updates as Team Germany takes to the skies—demonstrating, in every sense, that Yes, Girls Glide!
