Hometown: Narromine, NSW
Glider: Ventus 3T
How did you get started in gliding? Started gliding in 1972 as part of the Dubbo Air Training Corps Cadets. This led to membership with the then Dubbo Gliding Club and eventual solo whilst on a gliding scholarship selection course with he ATC
Who have been your most significant mentors or influences in gliding? As a Narromine boy, the beginning of a full time operation under the helm of John and then Beryl Rowe (Hartley) saw significant influence as well as Ingo Renner and Hans Werner Gross and Karl Streideck.
What are some of the major competitions you’ve participated in, and how did you perform? This will be the 7th WGC with the best achievement so far a 9th place in 15m at the Lusse WGC in 2008 with Graham Parker as my team mate
What’s your training routine like? Keeping current with regular practice is as much as I can hope to achieve at this stage with late selection and little opportunity to practice with my team mate Matthew Scutter. I head to Europe in late April to acclimatise and fly the Danish Nationals in an LS8 before beginning practice in the borrowed V3T.
What are your goals / aims for the upcoming competition? With a very high number of entries, the skies over Tabor will be crowded with many more gliders than we are used to here in Australia.
Hoping for a safe and enjoyable competition.
What’s something interesting most people don’t know about you? In January 2015 I flew from Kingaroy to Benalla achieving the longest ever “thermal only” cross country OLC distance of 1583km in a ASG 29e
What advice would they give to someone interested in getting involved in gliding? To begin a sporting life in gliding takes time, dedication and unfortunately more money than other activities so I stick to my adage, “you can have anything you you want, but not everything you want, life is a matter of choices” – live every day.
