Strengthening Safety & Community: Gliding Australia’s Human Factors & Clubs Round Table Event

Gliding is as much about people as it is about soaring through the skies. To keep our sport thriving and safe, Gliding Australia is proud to host the Human Factors Safety and Clubs Round Table Event on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October 2025 at the Best Western Airport Motel Conference Centre in Attwood, VIC (near Tullamarine).

This two-day program brings together leading experts, pilots, clubs, and sporting organisations for a high-value mix of safety insights, workshops, networking, and practical strategies to strengthen both our flying and our communities. Whether you join us face-to-face or online, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Why Attend?

1. Human Factors & Safety at the Core

From occurrence trends to launch operations and mixed-airspace challenges, day one is devoted to exploring Human Factors (HF) and how they shape our flying. Learn from keynote speakers including:

  • Air Marshal (Retd) Geoff Brown – on HF, technology, people, and culture.

  • Prof Sydney Dekker – world authority on HF and safety culture, looking beyond pilot error.

  • Phil Dodd (RFDS) – safety systems in remote aviation environments.

  • Drew McKinnie (GAus Safety Manager) – trends and risks shaping club activities.

Workshops and panels will tackle real-world safety scenarios, equipping you with practical tools to bring back to your club.

2. Clubs Round Table – Building Our Future

Day two focuses on the strength and sustainability of our clubs. Through keynote talks, workshops, and open dialogue, you’ll explore:

  • Strategies for volunteer engagement and recognition.

  • Lessons from other sports on building inclusive and resilient communities.

  • Succession planning and adapting to modern challenges.

  • Harvesting collective wisdom to set actionable safety and growth priorities.

Speakers include World Champion James Nugent, Football Victoria leaders Josephine LaPila & Helen Tyrikos, and GAus Board Chair Steve Pegler.

3. Networking That Lasts

With dedicated sessions for networking, social drinks, and a shared dinner on Saturday evening, this event isn’t just about learning—it’s about building lasting connections across clubs and aviation communities.
